Gargi Arya
I’m Gargi Arya, a history student drawn to memory, lived experience, and oral narratives. I approach history as something lived and remembered, not solely recorded. My work explores how personal narratives shape our understanding of the past, with attentive listening and careful documentation at its core. Through The Living Epics Project, I seek to preserve firsthand accounts of service in a manner that respects both the individual voice and the broader historical record.
A Note on Beginnings
My fascination with history began early, shaped by a childhood surrounded by books and a deep respect for the past. I have always been drawn less to dates and events, and more to how history is carried through memory and lived experience. This perspective deepened during my time at the Rashtriya Indian Military College (RIMC). Engaging with the archives of this century-old institution and interacting with veterans exposed me to the stories that rarely appear in formal records. I became acutely aware of 'unrecorded' history, particularly the subjective experiences and deeply personal meanings individuals attach to their years of service. Today, as a student at Vantage Hall Girls’ Residential School in Dehradun, I continue to pursue history with a focus on these narrative forms. Beyond the classroom, I devote myself to poetry and music with an active engagement in a range of sports, squash being my primary commitment. Looking ahead, I hope to continue working at the intersection of history and lived experience. The aim is not merely to record the past, but to preserve voices that might otherwise fade with time. It is within this meeting of record and remembrance that I continue to find direction.
